Hope is the thing with feathers that perches atop the soul. And sings the tune without the words, and never stops at all! Jack is an ordinary 11-year-old boy, one of the three brothers in his family. The movie traces his journey from adolescence to adulthood, even as his thoughts swivel and hang in a precarious balance. Both his parents (Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain) follow different schools of thought. While his father believes in the theory of ‘me first’, his mother believes in the ideology of benevolence, love and forgiveness. Jack’s father tries hard to mould him into a cast which will ensure his survival in the cut throat world, while his mother’s influence transports him to a world of peace and tranquility. As he grows up, he finds himself in a fix as he wants to meet the expectations of both his parents. Jack, although admittedly, has a deeper inclination towards his mother, yet makes it his prerogative to search for the meaning of his life. The boy sees the real picture in the light of pain and suffering and begins to develop a deeper perspective towards life, but loses his way somewhere in between. There is soon a time warp in the movie with adult Jack (played by Sean Penn) making a return. Jack is portrayed as a lost soul, making his way through the modern day concrete jungle.
